About the project

The UK is creating inventories of living heritage as part of its implementation of the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.Living heritage includes practices, knowledge and traditions that are maintained and passed on by the communities who take part in them.This project considered Rider-Waite-Smith tarot reading not simply as the use of a particular deck, but as a living practice carried, taught, adapted and understood by tarot communities across the UK.

The community submission

The submission was coordinated by tarot researcher Finbarre Snarey.Community consultation gathered testimony and supporting material from readers, teachers, writers, artists, historians, archivists, event organisers and others involved in contemporary UK tarot practice.The consultation is now closed. Thank you to everyone who contributed evidence, endorsements, documentation, advice or support.

What happens next?

Submissions are considered through the official UK Living Heritage Inventories review process.This includes:Initial checks
- Assessment by a Review Panel
- Consideration by a Decision Panel
- Discussion of any requested changes
- Publication if the submission is acceptedThe process assesses whether the submission meets the published inventory criteria. Inclusion is not an award, endorsement or judgement of cultural importance.
